Waukegan substitute teacher arrested after getting in fight with student, school district says

WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A north suburban substitute teacher was arrested Tuesday after getting involved in a physical scuffle with a student.

The incident happened at Jack Benny Middle School in Waukegan, and, according to school officials, the substitute teacher has been fired. Supt. Theresa Plascencia sent a letter to school parents Tuesday, writing, any staff conduct that compromises the safety and well-being of students will not be tolerated. And, at Tuesday night’s District 60 school board meeting, Plascencia addressed the 14-year old student directly.

“Whatever we can do to support you, we’re going to be here for you. Whatever happened today, regardless of anything, no one ever has the right to put their hands on you,” Plascencia said.

Supt. Plascencia called the incident “completely unacceptable,” but she did not provide any specifics about the incident.

The mother of the 14-year old boy involved in the scuffle with the teacher talked to CBS-2.

“I don’t know what to say with it. I just know that my son is hurt,” the mother said.

Waukegan police said the substitute teacher was charged with a misdemeanor.
