HARVEY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Harvey police have announced charges against a driver nearly five months after she allegedly struck and killed a 4-year-old girl outside an elementary school.
Swaleha Vhora, 32, of Harvey, has been charged with reckless homicide in the September death of Violet Singleton.
Harvey Police said Vhora was on the phone when her Hyundai Elantra jumped a curb and hit Violet Singleton back on Sept. 8. Deputy Chief Cameron Biddings said the young student was killed outside Whittier Elementary at 3 p.m.
"It definitely could have been significantly worse, but we are just glad that no other children were injured and we really just send our condolences to the family of Violet Singleton because no child should have been hurt that day," Biddings said.
Biddings said the FBI and state police helped his department with their investigation.
"They did a detailed accident reconstruction report and analyzed cell phone data to go ahead and actually pinpoint a cell phone was being utilized and Ms. Vhora was on the phone at the time of the accident," he said.
Biddings said the crash should serve as a warning to drivers not to be distract behind the wheel and to only use cell phones if they can do it hands free.
