WINNETKA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - High school jazz students from across the Midwest will have the chance to hear from a surprise guest next weekend at the New Trier Jazz Festival.

The school's Director of Jazz Nic Meyer announced they're adding Wynton Marsalis to the lineup that includes Delfeayo Marsalis and his Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform Sunday, February 5 at 2 p.m., while younger brother Delfeayo will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Meyer said he expects the famous New Orleans musicians will inspire the nearly 2,000 jazz students coming to New Trier.

“It’s pretty awesome to watch all these young musicians, all these young high school and junior high kids get passionate about this music and then just get so excited about seeing some of those heroes up on stage,” Meyer said.

Delfeayo is returning to the festival with his band to offer master classes to students from 52 bands at more than 40 schools across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.  He performed at the fest in 2018.

“We have special clinics on things like jazz improvisation and history and how to listen more deeply,” Meyer added.

Tickets for the performances at New Trier's Winnetka campus are on sale on the school's website.
