The bizarre incident, which police are investigating as an attempted robbery, happened at the Greenpoint Avenue station in Greenpoint on the evening of May 9.

Police said the 33-year-old woman was on the Queens-bound G line platform when the man came up around 7:30 p.m. and began to tug at her bag.

The man told the woman that she had an “electronic tracking device” in her bag that was “illegal to possess,” police said. The man then requested to search the bag.

The woman asked the man if he was a police officer. He told her that he was but then fled the station moments later, police said.

The woman’s bag was not stolen, and she was not injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
