Stetson Bennett still overlooked despite winning national title

Winning a championship over Alabama seemingly isn't enough to make Stetson Bennett a top 10 QB.

Stetson Bennett is no stranger to doubters. His road from walk-on QB to national title winner was not paved smoothly. There were ups and downs, many stumbles along the way, and the noise from the non-believers was deafening at times.

Even en route to the Georgia Bulldogs winning their first national championship since 1980, there were open discussions on whether Bennett was the best option for the team or if JT Daniels should be the guy. One would have thought those doubts would be put to rest after the performance Bennett put out last season.

That is not the case.

A recent ranking from ESPN had Stetson Bennett as the 44th best player in the nation and had 10 QBs ranked ahead of him. Passers like Tyler Van Dyke, Grayson McCall, and KJ Jefferson all have received more praise and respect despite never winning or overcoming expectations the way Bennett has.

The UGA senior threw for 29 touchdowns, 16th in the nation, and posted the third highest QBR last year with an 86.7 rating. He also won the Offensive MVP award in the championship game against Alabama.

Now does this mean Bennett is a lock to be a great NFL quarterback? No. In fact, most of the players ranked ahead of him are better prospects than Bennett. However that's not the argument. When speaking about the best in the nation at the collegiate level there are not ten quarterbacks better than Bennett.

Stetson Bennett has come a long way but it seems he is still under-appreciated and has a bit more to prove this year.
