According to multiple media reports, the Padres agreed to terms on Saturday morning with free agent outfielder Nick Castellanos and free agent starter Griffin Canning. The Phillies released Castellanos with $20 million remaining on his contract on Thursday after a tumultuous tenure in Philadelphia where he clashed with manager Rob Thomson amid declining production. The right-handed slugger hit 17 home runs and drove in 72 runs with a .694 OPS last season, and has reportedly been training at first base this offseason, giving him a chance to contribute to the Padres in the outfield, first base and at DH.

The Padres also signed veteran RHP Griffin Canning, who pitched well for the Mets last season before rupturing his Achilles in June. Canning had a 7-3 record with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts last season, which was the lowest ERA of his six-year career. If Canning is healthy, he should compete for the fifth spot in the starting rotation along with Matt Waldron, JP Sears, Triston McKenzie and Marco Gonzales.
