Apple partnering with TSA to help you get rid your physical wallet and make it entirely digital, including your driver's license or identification card.
The Cupertino, California company kicked off its renowned Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) Monday, virtually showcasing new software and hardware updates.
"To be fully free of your physical wallet, there's one more thing we need to bring to iPhone: your ID," said vice president Jennifer Bailey. "We're bringing identity cards to Apple Wallet."
In states that opt to participate in the program, residents can scan their license or ID using the iPhone's camera to create a digital copy. Apple says identification cards are encrypted and stored locally on the iPhone, using "the same hardware technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure."
Additionally, Apple has partnered with TSA to use digital identification at airport security checkpoints. Airports will be the first place you can use your digital ID, according to Bailey.
When you present your ID in the Wallet app, a pop-up notification will tell you what information is requested. Then FaceID or your passcode will authorize sharing the information with the TSA.
Apple is also adding digital keys to the Wallet app. "With iOS 15, we're bringing keys for your everyday places to Wallet," Bailey said. Corporate badges, house keys, and hotel room keys will now be available. Car keys, debit and credit cards, transit cards, amusement park passes, and flight boarding passes are already accessible on the iPhone.
Apple plans to roll out the identification card program in the Wallet app in the fall.
