A weekend disturbance call in the Upstate turned into a high speed chase, that left the suspect hospitalized. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office responded Saturday afternoon to a report of a man trespassing a business in Boiling Springs.
The suspect identified as ,43 year old Larry Eugene Cook was approached by deputies and refused to step out of his vehicle, after letting them know he had a gun concealed beside him in the vehicle.
Deputies said Cook told them that he did not have a concealed weapons permit. The suspect then tried to lock the doors and roll up the windows and another deputy opened the passenger door, Cook then allegedly pointed the gun at that deputy.
The suspect fled in the vehicle and led deputies on a chase reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. As the chase moved towards North Carolina, officers from the Landrum Police Department got involved and used spike strips on Cook's tires.
He then drove across the state line and the North Carolina Highway Patrol joined in the pursuit, which ended in Tryon when the driver pulled over into a parking lot.
Cook reportedly had a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was airlifted to an Upstate hospital. Cook is charged with assault with a firearm and failure to stop. There's been no word on his condition.
