Study finds a $100,000 salary in Dallas has the buying power of $80,000

Earning a six-figure salary is a goal many of us have.

It’s a sign that all that hard work has paid off, and though you probably won’t go private jet shopping any time soon, you can live comfortably and not have similar money worries of yore.

Unfortunately in Dallas, a $100,000 salary isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Even though $100,000 is more than double the area’s individual median income, according to a new study from SmartAsset, a $100,000 salary in the D actually has a buying power of around $80,000.

Still an incredible amount of money, but it’s still upsetting that your dollar doesn’t go as far in your hometown.

SmartAsset found its rankings by measuring federal, state and local taxes as well as local cost of living data, including on housing, groceries and utilities.

According to the Dallas Morning News, of the 69 cities analyzed Dallas ranked 22nd for its effective purchasing power, tying Nashville.

The top five cities with the highest purchasing power of a $100,000 salary include:

1 – Oklahoma City, OK
2 – Corpus Christi, TX
3 – El, Paso, TX
4 – Tulsa, OK
5 – Memphis, TN

The top five cities with the lowers purchasing power of a $100,000 salary are:

1 – Manhattan, NY
2 – Honolulu, HI
3 – Brooklyn, NY
4 – San Francisco, CA
5 – Queens, NY
