A movie’s ending may be its most important aspect, as many films in the past have been heavily criticized for having an ending that doesn’t match the rest of the movie. That’s why directors often come up with alternate endings, just in case their original plan doesn’t seem to fit. Now, actor Patrick Fugit has revealed director Cameron Crowe’s alternate ending for ‘Almost Famous,’ and many fans are wondering why it wasn’t used in the film.

For years, ‘Almost Famous’ fans have debated the fate of the film’s characters William and Penny Lane; with some arguing the two end up together, while others see them going separate ways. Luckily, actor Patrick Fugit, who played Williams in the film, recently revealed director Cameron Crowe saw a different fate for William than the one that played out in the movie. According to NME, it was another character from the film the director saw for William.

“[Cameron Crowe’s] like, ‘what William will discover is Polexia a few years down the line, and they will have a relationship,” said Fugit. Many fans were stunned by this, as Anna Paquin’s character Polexia was seen with someone else in the movie. Maybe one day fans will get to see the film with this ending instead.
