When DFW Airport was under construction in 1974, crews found the skeleton of a Plesiosaur, a prehistoric marine animal that stretched 30-feet long and lived in a sea that once covered DFW.

A film crew from WFAA documented the historic find.

50 years later, dinosaur fossils are STILL being found under DFW Airport.  Dale Winkler, the director of SMU's Shuler Museum of Paleontology, told WFAA, "There is a very rich history of fossils near the airport."

Winkler says that these days, mostly amateur researchers find new specimens "in and around the airport," which helps Winkler and other scientists "gain a better understanding of the life, terrain and ultimate extinctions during the Cretaceous period of history."

"When you try to understand something about the history of the earth, it really helps to have a good record," he said. "Every specimen counts. All of it is pieces of the puzzle."
