Naming a pet after a local sports icon is a pretty common occurrence in DFW. However, while there are plenty of dogs and cats named after Dak Prescott all throughout the metroplex; apparently the Dallas Cowboys quarterback is pretty popular in another part of the country as well. Prescott returned to his alma mater this weekend, as Mississippi State University recently honored their former quarterback by naming their new live mascot after him.
Last month, Mississippi State announced their new live mascot, a bulldog named “Bully XXII aka Dak.” Of course, that meant the school’s former quarterback had to be on hand to watch the dog take over for “Jak,” the retiring dog that had been the school’s live mascot since 2015.
According to WFAA, the dog received the traditional mascot harness over the weekend with Prescott in attendance.
“For the mascot of Mississippi State, of this university, to be named after me, it's humbling. It's something I hold very special me," said Prescott. Before becoming the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, Prescott played at Mississippi State from 2011 to 2015. While he didn’t win a Heisman Trophy or National Championship during his time in school, this honor might be the next best thing.
