There’s a popular saying in Latino culture that basically says, “unlucky in the game, lucky in love.” It’s “misery loves company,” with the added effect of a potential romantic spark between the two despondent parties.

Most soccer fans in North Texas have experienced some sort of misery during the World Cup, watching their teams get eliminated from the tournament, so the Dallas-based dating app Chispa wants to pair those “losers” together to hopefully make them “lucky in love.”

Per the Dallas Morning News, Chispa, which advertises itself as the No. 1 dating app for Latinos in the U.S., launched a new campaign called “Lucky Losers,” which aims to connect Latino singles who root for the same team, and suffer the same loss.

Julia Estacolchic, senior director of brand and marketing at Chispa, said, “We realized everybody’s celebrating winners when most people actually will go through a loss.

“Out of 48 teams that are playing, 47 will lose.”

Chispa hosted a watch party to hopefully pair some lucky losers on July 6, the day of the Spain and Portugal World Cup match. Their second watch party is today, when France takes on Spain.

Estacolchic is hopeful that this initiative will help more couples find that “chispa,” or “spark,” that turns their night around. “

We turn this into a positive experience,” she said. “OK, you lost tonight, but what if this changes your life? What if this sparks a real connection?”
