At the first Michelin ceremony ever in the state of Texas last year, there was a notable absence: chef Dean Fearing, one of Dallas’ most lauded and tenured chefs and the owner of Fearing’s at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas.
Fearing told the Dallas Morning News, “We kept waiting for the invitation. And the invitation never came to me.”
So instead of attending the ceremony in Houstin, Fearing flew to Hawaii, and he was sitting on a beach in Honolulu when he got the call that he was just announced at the ceremony, and his restaurant was just named one of the 20 recommended restaurants in DFW.
Confused, Fearing spoke with his publicists to urge him to check his email for the invitation that was supposedly never sent. Well, it was sent; it just happened to land in Fearing’s spam folder.
Though Fearing was unable to accept the honor in person, as he was 4,000 miles away, the accolade still remains, until the 2025 Michelin ceremony which occurs October 28.
We’ll wager Fearing will be checking his spam folder this time around.
“Oh boy was I embarrassed,” he said, though he did add, “it wasn’t bad being on a beach.”
