Few find evenings more romantic than a nighttime ride in a horse-drawn carriage throughout downtown Dallas. Unfortunately, a group of city officials want to put an end to the venture due to concerns of the animals' well-being.
Dallas City Council member Adam Bazaldua supports the overall ban on horse-drawn carriages, citing concerns about "street safety and the treatment of horses."
Bazaldua told the Dallas Morning News, "I don't think we should have a place for horses on our streets. I think it's inhumane for the animal. I think it's overall dangerous for having safer streets."
Opponents to the ban say that a total ban would be too harsh, and that horse carriage rides have been in DFW since at least the 1980s to help commemorate events like weddings, funerals, parades and proms, and that they provide a "nostalgic charm" that isn't available in other parts of the country.
A ban on horse-drawn carriages would make Dallas among the largest cities in the country to outlaw the rides, joining the likes of Chicago, Salt Lake City, Biloxi, Miss., and other areas, though it was noted that if the ban does go through, it is unclear how effectively Dallas could enforce it.
