After “decades of poor upkeep,” the city of Dallas is considering tearing down City Hall after potential repairs to the building could amount to over $345 million.
Council member Chad West told WFAA, “We’re at a really critical point now where we’ve got to make a decision: do we stay here?”
Council members are now debating moving to one of the many empty office towers in the city, left unoccupied since the Pandemic.
There are some detractors who don’t want to move.
Preservation Dallas Executive Director Sarah Crain said, “Dallas has so many amazing, architecturally significant, historically significant structures. This is our home base, this is our one opportunity to show stewardship.
"Why should we repair it? I think the better question is: Why aren't we?"
West said a final decision could happen as soon as the end of the year.
