All summer there were reports of thieves stealing catalytic converters from vehicles all over the metroplex. However, it appears the crimes are only getting worse, as police are now warning car theft is on the rise. Dallas police recently claimed there have been over 9,000 car thefts this year.
Car theft is becoming an issue nationwide, as a design flaw has led to some Kia and Hyundai models being targeted by thieves. This has led to class-action lawsuits in several states, including Texas. Now, Dallas police are warning this trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down, as the over 9,000 cars reported stolen this year, are 1,300 more than last year at this point.
According to Axios, thieves are targeting cars that lack engine immobilizers, which don't allow the car to start without the correct smart key present. Using a flathead screwdriver or USB plug-in criminals are able to start the vehicle. Hopefully this warning helps keep car owners safe.
