For years, anytime someone in DFW booked a flight with Southwest Airlines it was a guarantee they’d be traveling through Dallas Love Field to get to their destination. However, that may soon be changing as regulations that kept Southwest flights out of North Texas exclusively at Love Field will soon come to an end. With this, Southwest now has the option of expanding to DFW International Airport by 2025.
With the Wright Amendment coming to an end, air travel in DFW could be going through some major changes over the next few years. The law previously gave Love Field the exclusive rights to any Southwest Airlines flights out of the region. Now, the airline can decide if they want to expand without giving up space at capacity-restricted Dallas Love Field.

“Southwest is on the record saying that for an airline to survive they have to grow and Love Field is capped at 20 gates so there’s no opportunity for further growth there,” said Love Field aviation director Mark Duebner. According to NBC DFW, Dallas Love Field has dealt with decades of federal restrictions to protect DFW International Airport. Hopefully with these changes, Love Field is able to grow and expand as well.
