The Gharial crocodile won’t remain endangered for long if the Fort Worth Zoo has anything to say about it.
For a record-breaking fourth year, the zoo is celebrating a successful hatching, this time of eight Gharial crocodiles.
Per WFAA, the Fort Worth Zoo remains the “only institution in North America to produce multiple offspring of the critically endangered species, and the only one to successfully repeat the feat in consecutive years.”
Vicky Poole, associate curator of ectotherms at the Fort Worth Zoo, said, “It’s very rewarding to have another year achieving the healthy hatchings of these unique and vulnerable crocodiles.
"Every successful hatch gives our team another opportunity to refine our techniques and deepen our understanding of this remarkable species. The knowledge we gain through this work is an important part of the Fort Worth Zoo’s contribution to gharial conservation that we can share with our partners around the world.”
For now, the eight new hatchlings are being kept behind the scenes where zoo staff can closely monitor their growth and development.
