Thao Duong and Lam Mai of Garland were recently forced by a judge to pay back $1.5 million after being convicted of smuggling and selling illegal animal steroids and pesticides.
According to WFAA, the pair operated a website selling veterinary drugs and pesticides smuggled into the US from Mexico. Doung began this practice in 2011. She is not a veterinarian and did not require customers to provide any prescriptions for the drugs.
Along with the steroids, which were sold mostly to illegal cockfighting rings, Duong later began selling pesticides Taktic and Bovitraz, which are not approved by the EPA, and whose active ingredient in the pesticides is toxic to bees if released into hives, and then ultimately to humans when it ends up in honey.
According to the DOJ, Lam Mai fulfilled the illegal orders and sent them to customers.
Along with the $1.5 million fine, Duong was sentenced to three months in prison with two years of supervised release, and Mai was sentenced to two years of probation.
