With so many different reality competition shows on television involving music, just about every major musical act has had one of their songs covered on shows at this point. However, some bands still refuse to clear their music for these shows, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers. That’s why many were stunned recently when the Los Angeles choir the Freedom Singers performed ‘Under the Bridge’ on America’s Got Talent.’
Back in 2014, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman, Anthony Kiedis, was quoted saying “music that is near and dear to our hearts and the people we wrote it for and play it for, it doesn’t make sense to be seen in a television format.” Luckily, that changed when it came to the Freedom Singers who used their song to help get to the next round of America’s Got Talent. According to Yahoo, a publicist for the band did confirm “the band did in fact approve” this specific use of the song.
All four judges gave the choir a “yes” and host Terry Crews was moved to tears by their performance. Now fans will just have to wait and see what song they perform next.
