When discussing the greatest films of all time, often times ‘Apocalypse Now’ is one of the first movies people mention. The film has remained popular over the years, as stories from the set are sometimes just as well known as the actual film. However, one story from the filming of ‘Apocalypse Now’ has somehow gone undiscussed for years. According to Martin Sheen Laurence Fishburne saved his son Emilio Estevez from drowning during the filming of the movie.
During a recent interview, Martin Sheen told the story of Fishburne saving Estevez’s life. According to Sheen, “they were out in the boat one day and the boat got stuck, and Emilio got out of the boat to clear the area and he began to sink into the mud." Sheen added that Emilio "went under, and Larry very quickly moved and pulled him on board." The actor revealed the two kept the incident a secret, as he didn’t find out until years later.
According to People, the incident led to Fishburne and Estevez becoming “fast friends.” Of course, Sheen later thanked Fishburne saying “it was a very good thing to do and it grew to be very profitable as well." Of all the stories from the set of ‘Apocalypse Now,’ this might be the most unexpected.
