When dealing with bad service, the first thing many people do is turn to the internet to leave a bad review. While usually these reviews are done out of anger, rarely do the customers face any repercussions. However, that changed recently after a man was arrested in Thailand after leaving a bad review for the hotel he was staying at.

TripAdvisor put a warning on the Sea View Resort & Spa Koh Chang in Thailand after an American was put in jail and is facing criminal charges over a one-star review left on the website. “The hotel may have been exercising its legal rights under local law, however, it is our role to inform you so you may take this into consideration when researching your travel plans,” said the website. Thailand has very strict anti-defamation laws, which led to the man’s arrest.

The traveler was facing two years in prison and a fine of about $6,315, but charges were eventually dropped by the resort in exchange for a public apology. Still, TripAdvisor wanted to make sure travelers knew the potential repercussions of leaving a bad review. Hopefully restaurants don’t start taking up this same policy.
