Any time a movie is being made that is set in Texas, the first person they have to think about casting is Matthew McConaughey. The Texas icon has starred in a number of movies set in his home state throughout his career, and now he can add one more to the resume. It was recently announced that McConaughey will star in ‘Dallas Sting,’ a film about the 1984 Richardson girls soccer team that became the first American soccer team to win a major international tournament.

‘Dallas Sting’ tells the true story of soccer coach Bill Kinder, who led a 19-and-under Richardson team to the first FIFA-sanctioned world women’s tournament in China back in 1984. According to Dallas Morning News, that Texas team ended up winning the tournament in a stunning upset, with victories over Italy and Australia.

McConaughey will star as Kinder in the film directed by Kari Skogland. “To see what The Sting did with little support and no money, intertwined with how these very different young girls meshed for the love of the sport and country, is something beautiful that deserves not to be lost to history,” said producer Sarah Schechter. After this film, McConaughey will have yet another reason to be beloved in Texas.
