It has been 29 years since Michael Keaton put on the Batsuit, but with the actor set to return as Batman in the upcoming film, ‘The Flash,’ he clearly is excited to be back behind the mask. While a number of big name actors have portrayed the Caped Crusader since Keaton left the role, many fans still argue he is the best to ever do it. Now, Keaton has finally revealed what made him leave one of his most iconic roles.

For many ‘Batman’ fans, Michael Keaton’s portrayal of Batman in Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ and ‘Batman Returns’ is what made them love the character. However, they were left disappointed when the actor left the role during the development of ‘Batman Forever.’ For that film, Tim Burton was replaced by director Joel Schumacher, and now Keaton has revealed that the direction Schumacher wanted to take the film played a role in him leaving.

According to Variety, Keaton claims Schumacher told him, “I don’t understand why everything has to be so dark and everything so sad,” to which the actor replied, “Wait a minute, do you know how this guy got to be Batman? Have you read… I mean, it’s pretty simple.” Luckily, Keaton is now back in the role, and surely he won’t let it be too light.
