If you walk along the beaches of the Texas Gulf Shore right now, you might see what looks like hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny mounds of sand that look like anthills.
In actuality, they are more like mini volcanoes, and they actually serve a pretty important purpose.
According to the staff of at Quintana Beach County Park, these mini volcanoes were created by ghost shrimp because of the low tide the beaches are facing.
The staff explained that these mini volcanoes "are an important part of intertidal ecosystems, because they drive oxygen into the sand as they burrow which helps organic matter to decompose, enriching the sediment, and ultimately providing food for more creatures."
