Border patrol agents along the Texas-Mexico border have had to face a new fight since the beginning of the year: people trying to smuggle in eggs.

Since January, agents have reportedly stopped more than 90 people trying to sneak in eggs, amounting to fines of nearly $4,000, according to the Amarillo Globe-News.

Bringing in raw eggs is illegal, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, over health concerns related to the avian flu, along with the concern the potential transmission of Virulent Newcastle disease or VND, which is fatal in birds and "one of the most serious diseases of chickens worldwide," according to the University of California, Davis.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection warned anyone thinking about smuggling in eggs, that the "failure to declare may lead to potential fines and penalties."
