There are a few good things about winter in Texas: we get a nice reprieve from the 100-degree days, and for the most part, bugs cease to exist.
We know warmer weather is right around the corner though, and with it brings the return of a sight, and sound, Texans are all too familiar with: Cicadas.
They're huge, loud, and make their presence known in the Lone Star State, and in 2024 we will be seeing a lot more of them. A LOT more.
According to TIME, more than a million cicadas to emerge in the United States in 2024, in an event that has not happened since Thomas Jefferson was president in 1803!
Two different broods of red-eyed flying cicadas will emerge from the ground this year, Brood XIX, which arrives every 13 years, and Brood XIII, which arrives every 17 years, though this year the will emerge at the same time.
The next time these two broods will come out together will be the year 2245!
