It's just a part of life that Texans have learned to live with: the threat of hail whenever severe weather rolls around.
A group of researchers have made it their mission to learn everything they can about the weather event, in a "first-of-its-kind" project called Project ICECHIP.
According to CultureMap Dallas, researchers have collected some 4,000 pieces of hail in order to measure, weigh, slice, crush, chill, drive them across several states, see what's inside of them, and even eat them to learn as much as they can.
One of the team's lead scientists, Northern Illinois University meteorology professor Victor Gensini, said the whole idea of Project ICECHIP is to be "learning information about what the hailstone was doing when it was in the storm."
