Scientists want to shorten the length of a minute by one second in order to correct the atomic clock

A final decision is not expected until 2023

As people get older, time becomes more precious. This is probably why losing an hour for Daylight savings is frustrating to so many. While no one wants to lose time in the day, scientists are currently discussing shortening a minute to 59 seconds in order to correct a mistake to the atomic clock.

According to atomic clock scientists, time may need to be removed from clocks in order to adjust for the Earth’s rotation, which is apparently speeding up.  In order to adjust for the Earth’s rotation in the past, time had been added to the atomic clock, 27 times since 1972 to be exact. Now, some of that time needs to be removed as Earth has been completing its rotation in under 24 hours for the last year and it will likely get worse in 2021.

“It’s quite possible that a negative leap second will be needed if the Earth’s rotation rate increases further, but it’s too early to say if this is likely to happen,” said Peter Whibberley, a senior research scientist with the National Physical Laboratory. For those not wanting to see time shortened, a decision won’t be made on this move until 2023. Hopefully by then the Earth will slow down.
