A lot has been made over the last couple of years of what books are appropriate to keep in school libraries across the state of Texas.  At this point, we don’t know what’s safe for kids and what’s deemed unsavory content.

We do know, though, some subjects that are appropriate for our school libraries: butts and farts.

According to Chron.com, on Friday the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas ruled that public schools and libraries can't just ban books they disagree with, in a case that originated from parents in Llano County, where they complained their children were exposed to books in the library that showed “butts and farts.”

The list of offending book titles did include one about a boy searching for a new butt because he found his to have a crack in it, and one about a farting leprechaun.

The courts ruled to have 17 books reinstated into libraries explaining in their ruling, “Librarians may consider books’ contents in making curation decisions.

“Their discretion, however, must be balanced against patrons’ First Amendment rights... a book may not be removed for the sole—or a substantial— reason that the decisionmaker does not wish patrons to be able to access the book’s viewpoint or message."
