The weather in the Lone Star State is anything but predictable. We just went through a snowstorm to begin 2025 only for it to be 70 degrees on Friday.
No matter the time of year the weather is chaotic, so it makes sense that Texas is leading the charge (so to speak) on the amount of lightning we get every year.
A new study from Vaisala, a Finnish company that specializes in environmental measurement systems and products, revealed that Texas saw more lightning in 2024 than any other state in the nation.
According to Chron, Texas saw an estimated 40 million lightning events in 2024. The next closest state was Florida, which only saw an estimated 15 lightning events.
Further, the study found that the greater Houston area and counties just northwest saw more "cloud-to-ground flashes per density" than anywhere in the U.S., and that Teague, TX, a city in Freestone County, saw more than any other city in the nation!
According to Vaisala, Teague saw 736 lightning events in 2024! The next highest city was Orlando, which saw 414 events last year.
