It's a tradition every year for dignitaries to pardon a turkey for Thanksgiving.  This year, for the first time, that tradition has made its way to the east Texas town of Van.

Van mayor Tammy Huff its first turkey last week, but in the weeks leading up to the ceremony the city held a contest to name the bird. The winning name?  Dolly Pardon.

Lisa Mays-Gonzalez, Van Community Library director, told CBS 19, "The turkey is named Dolly because she is a strong female role model. It's a tribute to her southern roots and she is a very strong literacy advocate, so that ties in perfectly with our library programs."

Following her pardon, Dolly Pardon will serve as an ambassador for the Van Community Library, tasked with not only spreading "literacy and goodwill but also the importance of blessings and second chances for all."
