How many of us as kids thought we hit paydirt when we found an old coin or bill?  This money was so old, it has to be more valuable than its face value now, right?

Well, reality seemed to strike us in the face when our parents would say that old penny is worth exactly $.01.  We should’ve been looking for this $10,000 bill from 1934 instead.

At Heritage Auctions in Dallas, a $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Banknote recently sold for $480,000!

The note earned an almost perfect grade from Paper Money Guaranty, a paper money grading service, in Fort Worth, meaning it’s almost as mint-condition as it could be.

Interest in the 1934 $10,000 banknote did not come as a "huge surprise" to Heritage Auctions.  Vice president of currency Dustin Johnston said in another statement per CBS News that "large-denomination notes always have drawn the interest of collectors of all levels."
