In the latest episode of the Disgraceland podcast (which contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including self-harm and child sexual abuse), the story of music’s grimiest grifters and the greatest Punk rock debut is discussed -- say hello to the U.K.'s Sex Pistols.
LISTEN NOW: Disgraceland: The Sex Pistols (Pt. 1): Anarchy, Thievery, and the Death of Rock ‘n’ Roll

Fronted by a singer who saw traditional Rock and Roll as a disease, and a thieving guitarist whose propensity to nick musical equipment -- including items from icons like Keith Richards and David Bowie -- the Sex Pistols became known well before the most infamous member of all, Sid Vicious, ever strapped on a bass guitar and pretended he knew how to play.
Perfectly fitting for a band that cut its teeth performing for hardened criminals at Chelmsford Top Security Prison, where the band recorded a live album (released in 1990) on September 17, 1976, before bassist Glen Matlock exited the group. They destroyed other bands’ gear and slept with their girlfriends and they scammed the working class system that had scammed them for years, by convincing the biggest record label in the world to release their controversial music.
