PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A bill to stop police from using “less lethal” crowd control weapons has failed to make it out of an Allegheny County Council committee. The vote was 5-2.
The measure was proposed after Pittsburgh police fired tear gas, pepper spray and sponge rounds during a protest in East Liberty on June 1.
As a result of the weapons used by police during that protest, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto called for an investigation into the way the crowds were dispersed.
The protest was announced unsafe by Pittsburgh Public Safety after a small group began breaking windows and throwing items at police once the initial protest was over.
