PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh region, is preparing for an extra surge in COVID-19 cases in the weeks ahead.

The region has some 6,000 hospital beds, 1,700 of them are intensive care.

Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Bogen says there are plans if more are needed.

“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assessed the use of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh as an alternate care site if needed,” said Bogen.

She adds the county is lining up transportation and oxygen delivery.

Bogen says the best surge planning is social distancing to prevent a surge.
