PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority has issued a warning about “flushable wipes”.

As it turns out, they’re not that flushable.

With toilet paper shortages around Pittsburgh due to people stocking up during the coronavirus some have been using the wipes.

In a post on Twitter, PWSA says “Flushable wipes cause nasty backups in home sewer laterals and our sewer system. Only flush #1, #2 and toilet paper. Everything else goes in the trash.”

The term “flushable wipes” is a misnomer, since they don’t break up they can cause sewer pipe problems.

Also, the PWSA announced last week they are extending the authority’s shut off moratorium until May 31.

In addition the PWSA is waving the income qualification criteria so that no one is without water during the pandemic.
