PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium as three new cute African lion cubs.
The zoo has announced the birth of one female and two male cubs earlier Thursday.
The cubs were born at the zoo on July 16.
These are the first African lions born at the zoon since 1975.
The zoo says the cubs started nursing right away and that their mother has been “very attentive.”
The cubs are currently in the Animal Care Center, not seen by the public.
“The birth of these new cubs will help to sustain the managed lion population in the U.S. and continue to help conserve this vulnerable species. These cubs are extremely valuable as they represent a new bloodline, as the Zoo welcomed the adults from a wildlife facility from South Africa last year,” the zoo said in a statement.
There are now only 10,000 African lions remaining in the world. The population has declined over 43 percent over the past two decades.
The zoo will announce in the future when the cubs will be on display for visitors.
