The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has released new research data regarding vehicle crashes on the roadways.

AAA spokesperson Jim Garrity told NewsRadio KDKA that the best way to avoid a crash in the winter time is to leave early and take plenty of time to get to the destination.

“Nearly half of all crashes involve bad weather and they take place during the winter. You’re talking about crashes that result in 500,000 crashes, which means 500,000 chances for vehicle damage, and unfortunately, more than 2,000 road deaths every year.”

Garrity also says to slow down in rough conditions and don’t tailgate. It’s better to stay at home if at all able.

“Get out the door earlier, 20-to-30 minutes, or whatever it has to be. Because, when you’re running late, that flaws your judgement and makes you a worse driver. It makes you an unsafe driver. It makes you more willing to do things like speed, or tailgate.”
