A series of intense snow squalls and showers is anticipated to come through Southwestern Pennsylvania Wednesday evening into Thursday.

The National Weather Service tells KDKA Radio that in the Pittsburgh area, 1 to 3 inches of total snow could fall through Thursday with higher amounts possible north of the metro area and in the Laurel Highlands.

The snow will likely start mixed with a little bit of rain early evening on Wednesday before changing over to all snow moving into Thursday.

Widespread snow showers and, at times, squalls will fall overnight and continue into Thursday.

The cold front moving through will also bring wind with it, with gusts up to 40 mph or higher possible.

Temperatures will fall into the mid-20s on Wednesday evening and we will be at or below freezing through Sunday.

AccuWeather meteorologist Joe Lundberg tells the Big K Morning Show the possibility of some heavy snowfall, along with a drop in temperatures, could turn the roads into an ice-skating rink.

“They could produce some brief, little white-out conditions that might last for 10-15 minutes and all of the sudden, the visibility comes up dramatically but in that time period, the temperature probably drops a couple degrees, you get the initial snow that comes down, hits the pavement, it may be wet but then it goes below freezing and that can freeze up,” said Lundberg.

Thursday’s high is only forecast to reach 27 degrees.
