With two new grocery chains coming to the region, competition is intensifying, especially in Cranberry Township.

Wegman's, and most recently Meijer, have announced plans to open stores in the fast-growing area.

Tim Schooley with the Pittsburgh Business Times tells The Big K Morning Show that the competition means “it will be more competitive than any of us can ever remember” when it comes to prices.

And, Schooley adds that Meijer will announce openings in other locations

“I would expect to see another Meijer store to the north and I’ve heard rumblings, one that I haven’t verified, of one in Westmoreland County.

But, can the region sustain the new competitors?

“The grocery stores seem to think so or they wouldn’t keep doing it,” said Schooley. “How it plays out is anybody’s guess, will all these competitors be here for the long-term? That’s an interesting question.”

Wegman's announced location will be near the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and Mejier will be part of a development off Franklin Road near North Catholic High School.

Both locations are a short distance from the region's dominant grocery chain. Giant Eagle recently moved its headquarters to Cranberry Woods.
