Ground was broken Sunday on a new memorial and museum at Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill.

Nearly six years after a gunman killed 11 Jewish people at the Tree of Life, hundreds gathered Sunday to break ground on a new 45,000 square foot structure, which will include the nation's first museum that focuses on American antisemitism.

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff was among those who provided remarks.

Survivor Audrey Glickman told KDKA Radio's Michael Bartley that day will remain etched in her memory.

“We were doing the thing that we do every Saturday and someone shot his way through the window and came in and up close and personal, blasted people to kingdom come with his AR-15,” said Glickman.

Glickman says she is very lucky to be alive.

The new building is expected to open in 2026.
