Magee-Womens Hospital nurses were on Capitol Hill Tuesday, joining colleagues nationwide to push for changes to maternal and infant health care.

Magee-Womens senior professional staff nurse Jean Stone tells KDKA Radio what she wants lawmakers to understand about maternal health here at home.

“I want them to understand that we do continue to have a nursing shortage,” said Stone. “It’s especially egregious in Pennsylvania.”

Stone points to troubling trends in Allegheny County, including higher rates of preterm births, low birth weight, and infant mortality, with Black infants more than twice as likely to die before their first birthday compared to white infants.

Stone says federal action on staffing, education, and access to care is critical to improving outcomes for families in Pittsburgh and beyond.
