A Pittsburgh area church is holding a food distribution this weekend to help feed the hungry amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting this Saturday, and continuing for the next 12 Saturdays, hundreds of boxes of food will be available for people at the Greater Works Pittsburgh Campus in Monroeville.
Senior Pastor Gary Mitrik tells KDKA Radio's Rick Dayton that the USDA program, Farmers to Families, is sending in refrigerated trucks with 40-pound boxes ready to be handed out.
"We will be receiving a truckload of 1,100 boxes of food. They will contain dairy products, meat, produce and, at times, some seafood product," he said.
Mitrik said his church was contacted by the USDA program, Farmers to Families, which asked if they could be a distribution center.
"They will arrive with pallets of the 1,100 boxes shrink-wrapped so we don't even really know what's in them, but this is a USDA approved program."
Mitrik says the first 1,100 vehicles will get a free box of food. He said all you need to do is show up - no strings attached, no need to register.
Greater Works is located at 301 College Park Drive in Monroeville.
