Storm water catch basins will be treated with pesticides in hopes of curbing the mosquito population in the City of Pittsburgh and at the same time reducing the risk of diseases like West Nile virus.
The Allegheny County Health Department says they'll use a product that has a naturally occurring bacteria that kills mosquito larvae. The product is non-toxic to people, pets and aquatic life.
Treatments will take place Monday, June 7 through Friday, June 11 from 4:30pm to 9:30pm.
Roughly 10,000 catch basins will be treated, including areas that have had West Nile activity in the past.
The department says residents should eliminate and treat potential breeding sites on their own properties. One way to help is to remove any stagnant water as mosquitos can breed in water as little as 1/2-inch deep.
