The motivation for stealing them? Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium.

Police say multiple thefts or attempted thefts of catalytic converters have been reported throughout Pittsburgh this year. There has also been a rash of thefts across the United States and other countries.

Police believe the thefts happen in the overnight hours and they're asking residents to look for strangers and suspicious vans or trucks.

Vehicle owners of the swiped converters say they hear a loud sound after starting the engine before noticing the part is missing.

The public is encouraged to communicate any information with neighbors and adjust home security cameras toward parked vehicles.
