Water companies in Southwestern Pennsylvania are asking customers to conserve water.

More than 13,000 Penn American Water customers in Connellsville and in Uniontown are being told to conserve water.

Penn American's mandatory conservation order was issued because recent frigid weather led to a period of high demand, putting a strain on the water supply.

The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County is asking customers to reduce their water usage, “after a cold snap caused a period of high demand where customers were running their water to prevent frozen lines and the system was experiencing an increased number of leaks.”

MAWC is trying to bring water levels back up in three of their four systems: Indian Creek, McKeesport and Sweeney.

Affected areas are in Monroeville, Plum, Park, Gilpin, Duquesne, Pleasant Valley and Belle Vernon.

“We’re looking and listening for leaks, but while we are working on this, we need our customers to help out by conserving and reporting any leaks known or suspected leak,” said MAWC Resident Manager Michael F. Kukura.

MAWC adds that with temperatures rising, customers do not need to run their water any longer, to prevent freezing pipes.
