Harris now leads Trump nationally 48-43%: poll

A new poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris has overtaken former President Donald Trump in the race for the White House as she gains ground on several key issues.

The Suffolk University/USA TODAY national poll of 1,000 likely voters, taken immediately after the Democratic National Convention, has Harris leading Trump 47.6% to 43.3%.

That's an eight-point turnaround from a June poll taken right after the Biden-Trump debate, in which Trump led President Joe Biden 41.4% to 37.5%.

"Young people, persons of color and low-income households have swung dramatically toward the vice president," David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, said in a statement.

There were four standout demographics that represented swings of over 15 points away from Trump and toward Harris, according to the poll.

• Among voters with annual incomes of less than $20,000, a three-point Trump edge over Biden in June has become a 23-point Harris advantage over Trump in August -- a 26-point swing.
• Among voters ages 18 to 34, an 11-point Trump edge over Biden in June has become a 13-point Harris advantage over Trump in August -- a 24-point swing.
• Among Hispanic voters, a two-point Trump edge over Biden in June has become a 16-point Harris advantage over Trump in August -- an 18-point swing.
• Among Black voters, a 47-point Biden advantage in June has become a 64-point Harris advantage over Trump in August -- a 17-point swing.

Enthusiasm among Democrats is evident since the party switched candidates, according to the poll, with 68% of supporters responding that they are "very excited" to vote for Harris, compared to 30% who said the same about Biden in June. Similarly, 60% of Trump supporters say they are "very excited" to vote for him.

Trump still holds the edge on many key issues, though the poll shows Harris is chipping away at his leads.

• On the economy, Trump is favored over Harris by six percentage points, 51% to 45% -- less than half the 14-point advantage he held over Biden.
• On immigration, Trump is favored by three points, 50% to 47% -- down from the 13-point lead he had over Biden.
• On national security and dealing with China, Trump is favored by four points, down from 10 points over Biden.
• On health care and race relations, Harris has double-digit advantages of 14 points and 19 points -- both wider than the 10-point advantages that Biden held, USA Today noted.

With just over two months to go until Election Day, the poll shows 90% of voters have their minds "firmly made up," another 8% "might change" and the rest are undecided.
