A father has reunited with his two daughters after an excruciating battle with coronavirus.
On Wednesday, Alfredo Hercules was finally discharged and reunited with his daughters Isabel, 9, and Safiah, 7, for the first time in over two months, ABC News reported.
"It was very stressful being away from all my girls," Hercules said of his daughters and wife, Jamila.
The 39-year-old father of two was hospitalized at Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center, New York on January 11 after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia.
Prior to his diagnosis, Hercules was healthy, and does not know how he contracted the virus.
While in the hospital, Hercules was looked after by teams from various departments including acute care, critical care, respiratory, emergency, inpatient rehab, among others.
"Alfredo was in bad shape when he came to us," Dr. Perry Stein said. "When you have COVID-19 and it affects your breathing, it can be torture but Alfredo pushed himself every single day."
He continued, “He showed incredible perseverance and resilience and I give him full credit for pushing himself to this point."
On March 24th, Hercules was discharged with an oxygen tank and given a huge send-off was many of the hospital staff on hand to say goodbye.
Hercules expressed his gratitude for reuniting with his family and getting to share the simple moments with them.
"When you are away from home for so long, you start to miss the little things you took for granted," he said.
While recovering at home, he said he was looking forward to celebrating his daughter’s upcoming birthday and eating a home-cooked meal.
